Another murderous rampage in a long string of randomly occurring mass killings by rapid-fire, chain-fire guns

( powerful automatic and semiautomatic guns not existing, nor envisioned or provisioned for personal household or individual possession and use by the founding fathers of the U.S. in and by the 2nd amendment of the U.S. Constitution established as the law of the land on December 15, 1791 )

Gone to, Vicious in Heart, Vicious in Mind, Vicious in Deed

Normally meek and shy 20-year-old Adam Lanza methodically shoots to death 26 people at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown in the state of Connecticut, his hometown, on 12-14-2012, including 20 young children and 6 adults, and then shoots himself to death at the scene. Why? The ad-hoc worldwide cult of the macabre, as in culturally acquired necromania and sadism idiosyncratically precipitated behaviorally, running amuck? Cult of the macabre and the supply-demand market of and fan and subscriber base for the macabre are the same thing.

Clearly, Lanza’s act constituted the assumption of the power of commanding fear and the selection of a venue and class of victims in which and on which he could and did deliver swift and mass kill power. A surface analysis of his frightful, bloody act would find it to have been ostensibly perpetrated in a spiteful drive to exercise frightful negative, destructive and deadly power. His act very closely resembled a human massacre event by a raging monster in a scary story or movie and was analogous to a savage and terrifying Godzilla monster bursting onto the tranquil scene and springing into action with a blazing rapid-fire machine gun and wreaking ruthless wholesale slaughter, striking terror into the eyes, ears and minds of the multitude of people at hand and sending them into panicked, desperate, run-for-your-life dispersed flight in whatever directions affording them any escape, shielding or protection from the mayhem and murder, and the monster.

Some clue as to the psychological motivation for this massacre, as well as mass murders in general committed by individuals or buddies acting in unison, comes to mind from giving thought to the collective-victims style of this kind of act, in part symbolizing a violent and homicidal striking out at, attack on and punishment of the collective, or a select collective within the broader collective whole, and its institutions and communal spaces, indicative of a grievance and hostility against the social collective or a select segment of it. These acts when viewed at their face value but in this context may be credibly interpreted as ad-hoc, personal, personally conceived and executed, combat or military operations against the social collective, or society or an aspect or unit of society — combat operations that are often storm-trooper, homicidal-suicidal (kamikaze) missions in which the perpetrator derives satisfaction in his or her sense of competence and accomplishment in having succeeded in his or her objective and deed of having dealt a grievous multiple or mass death blow (against society or an aspect of it) before or upon his or her own death, incapacity or capture (the ego orgasm from his or her gloating self-congratulations of “mission accomplished”) at or by the hands of society’s official or momentary agents of law enforcement.

Financial condition and economic status of perpetrators must not be overlooked, dismissed or downplayed as dynamic elements involved in the motivational basis for these killings, even if astronomically larger numbers of people in the same financial or economic predicament do not resort to the same mass-killer behavior, as it is noteworthy to me that, to the best of my recall from my readings on this type of killings over the years, I cannot cite one instance in the U.S. of a financially well endowed and secure individual of having engaged in such conduct, although some perpetrators may have had a middle-class upbringing and may have come from a middle-class home. Mass killers may be more of a sub-population of economically troubled people than of mentally disordered people, or may be as much of a sub-population of the economically troubled as of the mentally disordered. Economic class status and standard of living, job status and level of pay or income, level of formal and informal indebtedness, inventory of financial assets, level of savings and equity in assets, necessary living-expense bills and all spending, et cetera, and significant changes in these, all need to be examined in a forensic financial accounting and audit on mass killers for their relevance to incitement of perpetrators to engage in mass killing. Maybe it is the case for many of the perpetrators of these rampage, massacre killings that there is an issue with them of their being “(indefinitely and hopelessly or helplessly) out of financial gas,” dealing with “a chronically food empty or impoverished refrigerator and chronically food empty or impoverished kitchen cabinets” and being “at the end of their financial rope, and at their wits end financially and/or the end of their ability to cope, disposing them to not want to face the future and to freak out.” The instances I am familiar with of an affluent individual having had perpetrated a massacre are of Nepalese crown prince Dipendra who, in 2001, slaughtered 9 people, including his direct parental family (possibly including grandparents), the ruling royals, by automatic, rapid-fire guns in an intoxicated rage reportedly in reaction to a tiff at a family party and his parents’ disapproval of and opposition to his choice of an Indian woman for a bride for himself, and American physician Baruch Kopel Goldstein who carried out a massacre of 29 and the wounding of 125 Palestinians with an automatic rifle in a mosque or Muslim temple in Hebron, Palestine, in 1994.

My guess of cause for this category of killing is that of a convergence of a combination of factors (causal factors): a personal crisis come to a peak or breaking point (including crisis conflict, frustration or aggravation), breaking-point stress (including financial stress), temporary-psychosis-inducing drug use or misuse (not barring, or entirely barring, arguably, psychiatric prescription drugs and their unknown or unacknowledged and unintended dangerous, neuropathological effects or side effects as well as their known adverse side-effects of brain-cell destruction and brain shrinkage), absence of or loss of or in social conscience, chronic, perhaps often hypo-digestible or indigestible, junk-food malnutrition and/or undernurishment, persisting or lasting toxic constipation (literally, full of shit — stagnant, festering shit), a raging oral or other body area infection or raging pain or both, and critical-point sleep deprivation or deficit, resulting in a peculiar, if not symbolic, generalized lashing out or backlash, perhaps directly fueled by seething rage and cumulative hormonal-system adrenaline, androgen and/or testosterone toxicity or intoxication tied or induced obsessive-compulsive aggressive thoughts, fantasies and action impulses. I also propose that a fascination or obsession with or a fetish for firearms, as well as, or an overindulgence in or addiction to horror and/or violence entertainment media (including patronizing violence, anger and hate agitation, encouragement and suggesting mass media and public figures), especially interactive such entertainment media (the amoral, if not psychopatically immoral, purveyors of violence, sadism and death media, who profit and make a living from it, will never acknowledge its mind, emotions and behavior poisoning harm but will do all they can or whatever is necessary to discredit attribution of such harm), may be a significant contributor or significant contributors to mass-murder, or massacre-murder, syndrome or disorder (a purely psychological dimension of influence) — as disgusting and heinous as these killings are to the vast majority of the public, the psychologically healthy and mentally ill alike, to the perpetrators they appear to be grisly, bloody drama or a real-life horror show they are staging and acting out.

In any event, the act of slaughter to some extent would likely constitute a form of perverse catharsis, with catharsis being the emotional, contemplative and acting-out venting, dissipating, resolving or purging of a probable haunting or nagging sense of grievance and hostility, or internal conflict, frustration or regret and hostility, and the stress, tension, or anxiety attendant to these.   In psychotherapy catharsis is typically accomplished by talk therapy -- that is, by talking out, most often, of issues of guilt, shame, hurt, victimization, anger and blame, referred to as “abreaction,” and crying. Catharsis of grievance and hostility, or other, sought or experienced through violence and killing may make sense to the perpetrator, though often it might not make any or much sense to most others or anyone else. Sometimes the hostility is self focused or directed hostility, as in self hostility or hostility that is about one's self. The perpetrator’s psychological consumption of hostile, macabre and horror media would likely constitute a fixation on or attachment to hostility and death sublimation media (vicarious experience media) for arousing, titillating, reinforcing or priming a savored acquired violence and kill desire or drive; and the would-be or latent perpetrator’s passion for, preoccupation with and an identification with and allegiance to guns would likely constitute a psychologically unhealthy identification with and allegiance to instruments and objects that are the instruments and objects of death and destruction, for meting out death and destruction, and that are the symbols and embodiments of kill and destroy power — altogether constituting a socially negatively charged (or loaded), dangerous mindset, conscious or unconscious to and acknowledged or denied by the affected person or persons. Fixation on, love of and the worship of guns is a dangerous and sickness mental condition (a pathology), even if some or a majority of mental health clinicians and professionals, politically and commercially compromised in their integrity, say otherwise. Cults of the gun are just subspecies of the cult of the macabre — ultimately, that is, the cult of horror and death.

Many people find positive or constructive catharsis of stress, built-up tension and anxiety in ecstatic religious performances, Yoga and mediation, therapeutic massage, therapeutic writing, aggressive sports and so forth.

Blood, skin, fecal and urine test samples need to be taken of the bodies by paramedics of these calculating, planful, by-surprise, ambush and blitz rampage and decimation killers, as soon as they are accessed, dead or alive, for biochemical and psycho-physiological analysis. Those taken into custody alive should also undergo an immediate galvanic-skin-response stress test, with longitudinal follow-up such tests, and every perpetrator should undergo a whole-body MRI examination, for compiling a bio-medical data base on this class of killer for study and referencing for preventative public-service intervention, including public education information for families, health services professionals and institutions, schools, employers and individuals.

This grotesquely aberrant and seemingly inane kind of conduct probably may not be the result of merely interpersonal social or psycho-social factors, and may not be sufficiently explained by a background check on these, but may be the result in major part of biochemical and psycho-chemical morbidity, with awry emotion and emotion-driven mentation, or vice versa, gone rogue — a condition similar to but more thoughtful and worse in magnitude than the out-of-character, short-fuse, reckless, violent and deadly impulse behavior expressed by some highly alcohol intoxicated individuals (pleasant and peaceful for the very most part when sober) that is externally triggered situationally. The tactical execution of the killings by these individuals reflects a forethought, deliberative and organized frame of mind or cognitive process that is not present or is much less present in destructive and deadly individuals highly intoxicated on alcohol — a slow-fuse, contemplative, crafty berserk as opposed to a short-fuse spontaneous, impulsive, eruptive, outburst, temper-tantrum spur-of-the-moment berserk or freaking out and berserk. The objective of these individuals seems to be to perpetrate a blatant act of shocking horror and socially blasphemous outrage that is simultaneously a complementary unforgettable or memorable act of infamous heroic villainy, with a focus on “horror,” “social outrage,” and “multiple or numerous (plural) victims” — in brief, an intentional heinous atrocity. Copycat inspiration and behavioral contagion (psychological) from the example of predecessor such killers no doubt exercise some part in the how of and the commitment to the commission of this kind of murder.

We must remember that at their very base these horrific acts of aggression are “assault” upon others with whatever artificial and advanced weapon used (from rocks and sticks, to knives and clubs, to axes, darts, spears, bows and arrows, and swords, to guns and bullets, bombs and missiles, to injury, sickness, disease and death causing bio, gas and other chemical agents, to laser, heat or radioactive-radiation beams and sound frequencies, etc.) being a more effective and efficient, deadly, and often brutal, weapon substitute for the human animal’s natural assault weapons of teeth, fingernails, hand slaps, fist punches, kicks of the feet, and arms and legs in wrestling (human animal assault weapons of attack, mutual attack, and defense or defensive counterattack). Ultimately, violence arises from the fight-or-flight dynamic or instinct (or reflex), with initiator fight often associated with survival predation and economic, sex, familial and ally territoriality — which is a perception-, cognitive-, emotion-based survival response dynamic, reflex or instinct. In viewing the intentional mortal belligerence behind the acts of massacres, mass murders or mass shootings by singular individuals in terms of the fight or flight mechanism, behavioral scientists would include among their hypotheses of explanation that this mechanism got stuck in the alarm and fight (belligerence) mode and on the switched-on position regardless of whether the perpetrator had a background of having been long-term mentally healthy or normal or long-term mentally ill prior to the perpetration of any of these psycho-socially unhinged deadly acts — mental health refers to the state of one’s perceptual-cognitive, emotional, personal and social functionality as well as behavioral health and fitness. The basis of the alarm component of the mechanism need not necessarily be a dangerous creature or other physical threat but could just as well be a circumstantial, social or psychological threat, like a threat or critical threat to one’s sense of security or competence in one’s ability to manage one’s essential affairs or to cope, or to one’s self esteem, or sense of self or social worth (respectability), or equanimity or sense of peace with one’s self or peace of mind, etc. The mechanism may have become stuck in the alarm and belligerence response mode in reaction to regular and/or enduring actual physical or psychological injury to one’s person, such as in being the object of bullying, harassment or disrespectful treatment, or of personally important social, interpersonal or achievement-related failure, or of important, traumatic and intolerable loss, or of traumatic and unforgivable personally unfair, unjust or callous treatment, or of traumatic and unforgivable discrimination or disenfranchisement, etc. Incidentally, the fight or flight response to a threat or danger is not an immutable dynamic but may also be expressed as a fight, freeze, hide or flight (“hide” often subsumed under flight or freeze but may be distinct from these) response as well as a fight, freeze, hide, negotiate or flight response.

Initiator assault not perpetrated for objective gain (material as well as social gain, including the exercise of dominance, influence and control) would be interpreted by psychodynamic theory practitioners as perpetrated to vent hostility and punish the source or object of the hostility (the aversive external-world stimulus/stimuli experienced or perceived by the perpetrator to be the cause, or source, of the perpetrator’s internal emotional response and state of hurt, or pain, and hostility), punishment of the source or object (which may be plural) even by direct or indirect embarrassment and humiliation, or to displace the venting of the hostility onto something or someone valued or highly valued by the source or object of the hostility, or to displace the combustible, combusting hostility onto a convenient and available target (which may or may not have symbolic significance), as on strangers or even defenseless children or animals for the latter, or against inanimate objects, as in punching or kicking through walls (sheetrocked walls), thrusting or knocking over furniture or throwing and/or smashing dishes or bottles.

In our honesty we can all agree to one certainty about the perpetrators of gun massacres and mass shootings: that they are indeed gun nuts. Incidentally, proportionally a small incidence of each the populations of those considered long-term and stably psychologically normal and healthy and those so considered mentally ill are perpetrators of gun massacres, mass shootings or personal bombings and the perpetrators of these acts may come from either of these populations in like proportions but both types (the normally, long-term mentally normal and healthy and those so mentally ill) may be of a similar malicious or dangerous and destructive, or perhaps even a virulent psychotic, state of mind, and underlying awry emotional state gone rogue, while contemplating, planning and executing these acts. Disturbed mentation may engender disturbed emotions or emotionality and disturbed emotions or emotionality may engender a disturbed state of mind or mental process, whose end product, in either case, may be disturbed or rogue behavior.

However, it is questionable that these acts legitimately can always be diagnosed as insane (technically speaking, the acts of mental decompensation and dissociation), whether perpetrated by individuals of either long-term good mental health or mental illness, when they are committed out of an objectively-based and precipitated action-reaction attitude or sense of grievance, spite, grudge and/or revenge and when considering that every human experiences acute emotional states and stark emotional ups and downs and could become negatively emotionally and behaviorally disposed and dangerous given the right circumstances (so to speak, “rubbed the wrong way”) and the at-hand means to be dangerous — mood, personality and behavioral disorders are not essentially conditions of insanity but mainly may be conveniently termed at times mental illness or psychological disorders that may afflict anyone on a transitory or intermittent basis, occasioned by adverse circumstances. Anyone, regardless of his or her mental health background, with a fascination or obsession with or a fetish for firearms, or who hunts (kills) for enjoyment, is a potentially dangerous person or a such latent killer and may be associated, past, present or in the future, with the exponentially many, many, many more common gun killings and shootings of other humans getting little or no communications and news media or public attention in comparison to massacre killers and mass killing. More guns in society will not ameliorate the problems of gun-related killings, maimings, incapacitations and other injuries but will escalate them.

Reject the guns-unlimited gun-nut constituency, lobbyists and merchants and the firearms industry’s agenda of fear, a guns saturated society and raging gun sales. Gun nut in proper speech means gun fanatic.

Whoa!, throngs of exhibitionist, provocative gun-nut 2nd amendment distortionists, extremists carrying and/or wearing guns on beaches, streets, Amtrak trains and in national parks, and wanting to so go into Starbuck’s coffee cafes, and into bars and churches and to arm schools, as a start.

The paranoid, hyper-phobic gun-nut vigilante and violent revolutionary crowd argue they need guns, without limitations and restraint, to resist the potential of tyrannical government, while they menace and anguish our overwhelming-majority peace-loving society who do not want these savage-, bloody-minded lunatics to be our new, self-imposed government and to turn our social, economic and political evolution way back. We need our democratic-republic form of government, in a strong and stable form, to curb them from their longed-for revolution and itchy-trigger, trigger-happy guns and protect us from their would-be, with certainty, tyranny of us, nationally, hemispherically and worldwide, in accord with their dystopic views — if they had government control, these anti-gun-control folks would impose gun control against the majority as well as population censorship (purging [as in extermination and expulsion, or exile], persecution and silencing) of all they dislike, with impunity and without toleration for opposition or complaint. These are not the good guys they portray and presume themselves to be. The gun-violent career criminals, ideological terrorists, controversially deranged (episodic or long-term) mass killers by multi-round and chain-round shooting guns, and garden-variety ordinary gang-, transgression-, impulse-, mischief-, conflict-, situation-, confrontation-, cover-up-, alcohol/drug-crazed-, road-rage-, agitation-and-incitement-, temper-tantrum-, anger-, hate-, grievance-, grudge-, revenge-, jealousy-, envy-, bad-business-deal-, financial/job-loss-, infidelity-, divorce-, malice-of-heart/malice-of-mind-, other-passion-, etc.-, motivated shooters, in possession of or with easy access to firearms, all come from the general gun-nut herd and mentality of conflict-resolution and societal problem solving by firearms and fear and intimidation by firearms, whether with a background of generally intact mental health or chronic mental disorder. In short, their tipping-point (or disturbed-balance) state of mind, with the underlying awry emotional state, and access to particularly public and rapid-fire automatic and semiautomatic guns are the problem.

By the way, ours is becoming a nation of junk-food junkies and junk-food-junky imperialism, sacrificing and defending harm to our physical and mental health in the name of often high-turnover, insecure, low-paying and minimal-fringe-benefits “jobs,” “inexpensive, abundantly affordable foodstuffs” for those of low income and freedom of choice of individuals from the cautionary counsel of and purveyor regulation by the nanny state but really primarily for maximal junk-food company profits, stock shareholder earnings and company executives’ high pay, fringe benefits and bonuses, and for the sake of our kitchen-lab, sci-tech-manipulated craving for this food. Junk food is the insidious bane of American physical and mental health and fitness that the lead cup was to these for the Romans. I attribute to the junk-food diet the widespread dumbing of Americans, including politicians, professionals, the educated and highly educated, and broadcast media figures, observable in the now common and rampant interspersing or saturating of their speech with the interjection “you know,” “you know,” “you know,” “you know,” “you know,” “you know” ….

Highly concentrated or monopoly mass media control, whether local or national, is a means of true mass mind control.

Of even more concern is majority wealth ownership and highly concentrated or monopoly mass media control by the financially ruling minority high-wealth and livelihood-investor classes and their proxy business and political-power entities and servants.

Tangential to these concerns, the author of this writing repudiates the fossil-fuels expansionist drill-baby-drill, ravage, pollute, poison, spill, blight and kill national-fuel-energy agenda of primacy-of-profits 2012 GOP presidential candidate Mitt Romney and rejects his candidacy and strategy of opacity regarding the public disclosure of his financial and tax-, with emphasis on “income-tax,” paying integrity and character in publicly vetting, as a presidential candidate, the status of his publicly accountable and verifiable ethical fitness to occupy the highest public office in the nation, without his insistence that the public rely on and trust his self-serving mere words and uncorroborated assurances of financial and tax-paying rectitude.  All federal civil servants and members of the armed forces are subjected to an agency or FBI character background check or investigation and all proposed presidential cabinet secretary appointees are subject to Congressional challenge and confirmation as well as an FBI background check. Traditionally in modern times all other presidential and vice-presidential candidates, except for one, have made extensive public disclosures of their income-tax and financial background — incidentally, in separate property marriages, in which a non-candidate spouse of a candidate for political office may have entered the marriage with substantial personal assets or an inherited fortune, the political-office candidate spouse has no right to or involvement with those assets by law so long as those assets remain separate property and disclosure of that spouse’s personal separate assets and related financial affairs may be a liable trespass against the privacy of that spouse and a liable basis for divorce of the offending spouse. Certainly mega-millionaire scion Mitt Romney knows this when he facetiously cites former presidential candidate U.S. Senator John Kerry, D-Mass (who promptly made a thorough public financial and income-tax disclosure on himself during his candidacy), as having not made a public financial and tax disclosure on his wife, the heir to a large fortune before his marriage to her, and dishonestly makes reference to this appropriate nondisclosure (a disclosure John Kerry would have had no legal right to make) as a justification and excuse for making a peek-a-boo minimal, scant and untimely (in effect “I’ll reveal the other financial and tax tidbit on myself after the election.”) disclosure of his own financial and income-tax filing and paying background and history. The same legal situation applies to U.S. Senator John McCain, R-Az., and his presidential bid in 2008 when he, also as an exception to the clean-politics norm like Romney, disclosed publicly only his own controversially two most recently due and filed 2006 and 2007 federal income tax returns but appropriately nothing on his premaritally independently rich, mega-millionaire heiress wife, another example of minimal financial and tax disclosure on a presidential candidate and nondisclosure on a wife by a presidential candidate Romney cites as a justification and excuse for his not making a full or extensive financial and tax disclosure on himself.  Apparently Romney is obstructing full or extensive disclosure on himself because he is embarrassed and has something disturbing to hide and feels the harm to himself from tiny disclosure or nondisclosure is tolerable in comparison to the devastation a full or extensive disclosure might precipitate.  It is suspect when he says in effect “I have paid lots of taxes” and avoids the term “income taxes” — he seems to be fudging with the use of this hedge language. His remark that his tax returns are proper but that if he were to publicly release and disclose them Democrats would pick through them to find fault insinuates that there are concerning, culpable faults with them, indeed, that are grist for political controversy and damage to him and his presidential candidacy. Romney is of dubious financial and income-tax paying and filing character until there is certified documented revelation to the contrary, which may, however, result in a finding of disreputable character.

Like in any election, character is and always is a crucial issue. It is incumbent on the voting citizen public to thoroughly audit and know everything about its prospective leaders and to make its choices of elected leaders based on its examination and full and certain knowledge of the candidates for elective leadership office — for making informed decisions and choices — “beyond words and arguments.” Character, especially long-time entrenched adult character, is the foolproof indicator and predictor of an individual’s inclinations and future patterns and habits of conduct and action, and not at all an individual’s words or words separated from deciding-others’ knowledge of that individual’s character. Do not trust shadowy figures, especially those insistent on remaining shadowy, as regards matters of their character, such as Mitt Romney. It is a truism that behind many a big fortune is a big crook and a path beaten thereto by crookery, often a path beaten by ruthless fortune-hunter or glory-hog individuals with a flair for finery and a way (forte) with words — “All that glitters is not gold.” Just like it is foolhardy to entrust our money or lovely, or gorgeous, daughter, wife or girlfriend with a stranger or unsavory individual, it is a most probable unpardonable, regrettable blunder in the making to entrust the leadership of our nation to a shadowy individual of dubious or uncertain character. Do not let the seductively, for some, glib Republican duo of glitz and glamour both demagogue, and scaremonger us on, the competence of government while ignoring the endless procession of grandiose incompetence, recklessness, roguery — the most recent high-profile such rogues being J.P. Morgan-Chase Bank and its CEO Jamie Dimond and Barclays Bank and its CEO Bob Diamond in July of 2012 — and failures in private enterprise, pretending and mythologizing that somehow and magically humans in government service are different and lesser than humans in commercial employment. And do not let them demagogue, scaremonger us about, and undermine our confidence in and commitment to keeping our independent, full-fledged, defined-benefit Social Security retirement, Medicare and Medicaid and dupe/sweet talk divide and conquer the older and younger generations into approving the fracturing and gradual destroying of Social Security retirement, Medicare and Medicaid, now free of investment in the turbulent and often equity-destroying stock-market casino, with promises of preservation of the current defined benefit models for those 55 years of age and older at the time of system reform to the privatization, marketplace models they propose (to attract the voting support for the reform from the particulary voting active bloc of elder voters, giving them a sense of safety and remaining-life security for themselves). If the generations declare with their unified votes in the majority that these defined-benefit, and government protected and administered, social-safety-net programs will not be deprioritized and are not subject to compromise, they will not be diluted and compromised and they will be prioritized and made to work permanently by politicians who observe and understand that their political-office jobs depend on their viability, in disregard of the talking-heads and tongue-wagging news-talk commentators of the mainstream mass news media of public persuasion owned by the corporate wealth class. Let us not be swayed into believing that the foe of these programs and the social safety net in general, being Romney’s VP running-mate Paul Ryan, is suddenly now the friend of Medicare with the gimmick of his trotting out his 78-year-old mother as a political prop before an adoring Republican crowd and announcing that she is receiving Medicare and attesting to his want to save Medicare (yes, his no-change protection plan for those 55 years old and above at the time of legislative enactment of his proposed Medicare system reform and changeover for future recipients would take care of her and of course any mother would like to see her son to be the vice-president of the U.S.) — expediency and shameless duplicity are a centuries-old, tried-and-true successful ploy of many desperate and ruthless politicians.

Do not dare risk or entrust Romney and the Republican Party with the fate of your Social Security retirement and elder-care Medicare benefits, which they prefer to eliminate but as an alternative would consider privatizing with vouchers senior citizens could investment-gamble in the stock-broker-fees-and-commissions-collecting roller-coaster, often-derailing-and-crashing, stock market and shop to rip-off, token-paying (in aggregate net-effect), and Ponzi-scheme, for-profit insurance companies, a Congressional Republican proposal promoted by his presidential running-mate Tea-Party trickle-down-economics ideologue and evangelist, the infamous economics ignoramus and dumkoff U.S. Rep. Paul Ryan, R-Wis., stooge chairman of the U.S. House budget committee. Since graduating from college with a B.A. degree in economics and political science in 1992, except for working for some months as a salesman and consultant for a construction company owned by relatives, he has worked in jobs for the very nanny government that he and his anti-populism Tea-Party rant and demagogue against and is a true hypocrite hog-at-the-trough-feeding Capital-Hill government insider — he’s never had it so good and is swilling, grunting and groveling for better.

Republican and Tea-Party libertarian trickle-down economics is nonsense, sham economics that has no prima facie validity, as in concept or principle, nor validity in practice. Tax cuts and minimal taxes on the wealthy do not thereby result in economic and job growth as this doctrine maintains, inasmuch as a matter of simple mathematical logic first and foremost for any business to remain in business it requires a salable product or service and regular money-paying customers to purchase the product or service. If there is no customer or are not enough customers with sufficient money to purchase the product or service at a profit, in excess of all the costs of goods sold (referring to both products and services here), that is enough to support the vendor’s or vendors’ revolving business operating and personal living expenses, the business goes kaput. Similarly, no matter how much inventory a business has to sell or the extent of the service it can render for sale, if the business has no customers or not enough customers with enough money to purchase the products or service at above the cost of goods sold and enough in quantity to fully support the vendor’s or vendors’ revolving business operating and personal living expenses, the business is not or will cease to be a going concern (a solvent, profitable ongoing business). Nor can businesses hold back activity in wait of or for ideal or desirable tax and/or market conditions without suffering customer attrition and critical sales and income shrinkage, or suffering loss of customer acquisition, or growth, and products and services sales and income opportunity, as well as endangering their existence or competitive market rank, as overwhelmingly businesses are in customer, sales and market-share competition, commonly life-and-death competition, with their market segment peers — it is an act of competitive suicide or grave self injury for a wholesale or retail business to predicate and time business activity on tax policy (as opposed to customer demand), a recently invented trickle-down-economics hypothetical market construct termed “Lack of (Market) Certainty” tax-policy-based deferred market commitment by business, referred to as alternatively the “market certainty fairy” or “market uncertainty fairy” by economist Paul Krugman (the latter designations subscribed to of late by many other economists and market analysts): there is no such thing as market certainty, nor has there ever been, in the capitalist marketplace. In essence, a business is a job, although it may be a complex or elaborate one for large entities, that one takes on or invests in to generate income on which one can make a living or to contribute to one’s financial support or betterment. A mass customer base with money and purchasing power is the primary driver of business viability and business growth (lack of this is the common driver of business contraction and failure) in an economy and not tax cuts for the wealthy minority of the population. It is correct that investment money capitalizes many businesses via bank loans (sourced from bank customer deposits) and corporate stock-share and bond purchases via investment brokerages, as well as to a far lesser extent via finance companies and via small groups of venture capitalists or such individuals or via personal associates, etc.; however, this investment money is not necessarily mainly trickle-down-economics wealth-class money but is also significantly employee (inclusive of hundreds of billions of dollars in public-employee investment retirement funds), small-business-owner and retiree investment money as well as homeowner and private college and university stock-market investment, etc., money (401ks, 503bs, IRAs, SEPs, etc.), whose equity in recent years was obliterated in huge part by the reckless trickle-down-economics and deregulated banking system and stock market of the giant-tax-cuts-for-the-rich and prolific-wasteful-pointless-war-spending of the Bush-II Presidential Administration, which left our economy in the shambles it was in late 2008 and has been creeping out of under the Obama Presidential Administration.

If major U.S. corporations unusually have trillions of uninvested and undeployed dollars languishing in bank accounts, accruing meager interest, both abroad and domestically, it is not because of their trepidation of a federal-tax-policy market uncertainty fairy but is because of their market-study and business-plan calculation-based pessimism as to a lack of sufficient level of purchase demand to payback investment and return sufficient profit on investment in sustained or increased levels of production, inventory, facilities and labor as well as because of their such skepticism in the security of their money in possible sustained levels of investment in or increased investments in the stock market (representing other corporations) at this time of a worldwide deep economic recession brought on by the financial-serivces-corruption-caused breakdown of the nearly worldwide banking system and collapse of the nearly global first-world housing, if not real-estate, market. This is to say that perhaps, for now, banks are the safest refuge for their deployable money and widely, with individual and niche exceptions, they are figuratively in treading-water or holding-their-ground mode or competition in the marketplace. No rational business will invest money in something that would not most probably, based on objective criteria, and often collateral, return the investment money and all costs of the investment money with an acceptable profit margin in a reasonable time frame. In a like regard, cost-efficient, profit-maximizing U.S. businesses are unlikely discretionarily to create jobs in the U.S. out of a sense of patriotism or to bring back low-expense manufacturing and production offshored operations and jobs to a significantly more expensive U.S. business operating and labor environment — a conumdrum of American libertarian laissez-faire free-marketplace capitalism — even though these business stances held collectively by an appreciable portion of the U.S. business community would result in a significant level of indefinitely increased U.S. unemployment and reduced general consumer purchasing power and marketplace products and services demand in the U.S., as each concerned individual business would not want to sacrifice its market and profits competitiveness or advantage to its rivals. Despite decreased employment, decreased consumer purchasing power and decreased market demand in the U.S. resulting from the practice of outsourcing manufacturing and production operations to low business expense nations by U.S. corporations, these corporations can still earn record profits by selling their foreign-sourced low-expense, world-competitive pricable (flexibly adjustable in price markup and profit margin) products to the large majority of people still employed and with secure incomes in the U.S. as well as compete and sell to the employed (even those of poverty-wage) and secure income class of people in Europe, Canada, South America (including all of the greater South America), Asia, Africa and all other parts of the human populated world. Business for the most part does not reason and operate from a public-interest macroeconomics engineering perspective like the U.S. Treasury Department and Federal Reserve Bank do, and sometimes do presidents and the Congress. Given the whole of this context, Romney’s claim that as president he could and would create 12,000,000 jobs is as incredible and unsound as dropout 2012 GOP presidential candidate Newt Gringrich’s claim that as president he would return the U.S. economy to $2.50 per gallon gasoline and is purely rhetorical political-bait for votes from wishful-thinking, naive, if not really really dumb, voters. However, as some Republican politicians and libertarian laissez-faire economics business interests have been perpetually arguing and recommending, U.S. corporations could be maximally profitable from domestic operations and all of U.S. corporate offshored manufacturing and production could be returned to the U.S. and there could be essentially full employment, with a surplus of jobs, in the U.S. with the abolishment and outlawing of the minimum wage, employee fringe benefits (including employer-sponsored health insurance) and rights (including collective bargaining and binding arbitration) and lawsuits, payroll taxes for employee disability, unemployment compensation and Social Security retirement and Medicare retirement health care as well as the entire tax-supported public social safety net. Ultimately, business activity and incentives and market demand (that is, consumer purchasing power and spending) are the primary job creators, as government can only modestly incentivize business, although significantly spend and financially fuel business and the economy, at a significant cost to taxpayers, but yet modestly influence the spending of others.

While a good many of the wealth class regard taxes, especially income taxes, and the social programs that are funded by them, as stealing-from-the-rich socialism, the basic purpose of taxes in reality and practicality is to fund social and economic safety and order, shared infrastructure and the national and local essential common good (in part inclusive of law, public civil institutions and civil service and public education and employment-skills training) that enable, nourish and undergird the viability and thriving of general-entry and fair-play private business and industry, or capitalism, in the U.S. (in toto termed “social capital” by economist Joesph Stiglitz), social capital that is respectively virtually nonexistent and existent to a far lesser degree in most of the highly impoverished and much less as relatively widely prosperous rest of the world. Incidentally, the wealth of the rich and everyone else in a civilized society, wealth that is only possible such as it is and has been in any civilized society of the past or present, inherently strongly communal or communitarian societies, comes directly or indirectly via this social capital expressed as the labor, production and consumption of others and public infrastructure, services and authority (especially technical education and training, public safety works and services, and law and military protection and enforcement).

Also, the Romney-Ryan copycat question, originally asked by former President Ronald Reagan, to the effect “Are you better off now or before [Obama] took office?” is an insincere and dishonest question since the recession that our economy is slogging its way out of visibly showed itself in catastrophic, dramatic fashion to the nation and entire world during the last few months of the Bush-II administration, in the months preceding President Obama’s election to office as president, a recession, ostensibly precipitated by the frontally cascading tidal-wave financial wreckage of the national and international banking systems collapses and the collapse of the worldwide-investor-speculative, largely liar-loan subprime and bubble mortgage and housing markets, that took time and a lot of work on the part of the Obama Administration to dissipate and halt. Our economy is in the post-tidal-wave-fallout state now and is in the sluggish but certain rehabilitation and turnaround, or recovery, state. The GOP and a Romney-Ryan presidency duo would like to claim hero responsibility for the completion of this incipient rehabilitation and recovery of the economy, whose battering and breakdown their policies and values caused.

Paul Ryan, a professed devotee of libertarian laissez-faire fantasy-economics, flattery-of-the-wealthy “fiction” writer Ayn Rand, is a philosophical opponent of real-life, successfully applied Keynesian economics, the economic ideas of early 1900s British economist John Maynard Keynes that advocated government intervention in the economy in times of economic collapse or crisis, like in 1929 and the 1930s of the Great Depression, with activist, rescue commerce-stimulating and job-creating spending and not budgetary austerity, even in the presence of budget deficits, which in the form of President Franklin Roosevelt’s New Deal social programs did much to relieve the economic havoc of the Great Depression in the U.S. and led to the creation of the social safety net and Social Security retirement in the U.S., always opposed by the Republican Party leadership and conservative Democrats (mostly southern-state Democratic-Party politician defectors to the Republican Party). Further, in late 2008 both Republican President G.W. Bush and his Secretary of the Treasury Hank Paulson in concert with Chairman Ben Bernanke of the Federal Reserve Bank (FRB ) and the FRB employed Keynesian rescue economics to salvage and stablize the whole of the U.S. banking system from a domino collapse, inclined to fell much of the nation’s greater business sector, with pre-TARP financial intervention maneuvers, followed by the joint-houses of Congress authorizing the TARP (the Troubled Assets Rescue Program) government spending (really lending) stimulus on the teetering, investment banking sector, with this followed in early 2009 by the Obama Administration’s Congressionally authorized economically wide-ranging spending and lending Fiscal Stimulus Package, also for further securing the banking sector in general as well as the financially endangered major U.S. auto companies — Keynesian intervention that has been wholly successful. Of all of the many nations of the world stricken and economically and fiscally setback by the deregulation, dog-eat-dog libertarian bubble-up, bubble-burst economics of the Bush-II Presidency era, the U.S., despite is woes, is the best off and eking its way back to full recovery ahead of all others (excluding Germany, which was hardly affected). Amazingly, in a departure from his Tea-Party libertarian economic philosophy, Congressman Ryan submitted to reality and voted in favor of TARP.

One major way of averting continuing unmanageable federal government debt and deficit spending is for the U.S. electorate and its elected leaders to spurn and deal an irrevocable death blow to idiot, unscrupulous and disastrous libertarian laissez-faire economics, so Keynesian economics will not have to intervene with massive government spending (of public tax money diverted from progressive sole and direct basic public-needs benefit, sometimes going in part to pay and otherwise financially reward high-up corporate culprits) to rescue and bailout devastated and gutted industry and the economy from their repeated Apocalypse-wasteland-scale destruction by libertarian laissez-faire economics. This coup de grace would include identifying all culprits (defrauders and fleecers) and vigorously prosecuting and jailing them for life without parole and the confiscation of all of their assets worldwide, including those in the possession of nominees and alterego entities and names, with a federal law passed that provides for this. If these highly educated, intellectually highly developed and savvy financial predators and kleptomaniacs remain in place or are allowed to carry on as usual in society, they will compulsively continue to scheme on, defraud and fleece our society and institutions and financially cripple and bankrupt us and our institutions and governments at every level wholesale again and again. Fines on them and their forced departures from their jobs are meaningless in inhibiting their dastardly mindset and in curbing their financial atrocities, that are far more rewarding to them than the punishment meted out to them when they are caught red-handed under current law and punishment policy.

The Romney-Ryan Republican presidential-candidacy (blatantly supported in money and by media spokespersons, endorsers, books, articles, and ads by the wealth class overall), in addition to being about preserving monopoly of the fuel energy industry by the outdated, dirty and dangerous fossil-fuels companies, is about making permanent the extended but time-limited tax cuts for the rich, scheduled to expire on 01-01-2013, and further cutting their taxes financed by the elimination of what they refer to as government entitlement programs, including food stamps, welfare, Obamacare, Social Security retirement and Medicare and Medicaid, to start.

Contrasting with the twilight-zone libertarian economic views of the Romney-Ryan presidential candidacy duo are the contemporary Keynesian views of Nobel Prize economists each Paul Krugman, Ph.D., and Joseph Stiglitz, Ph.D., which when compared are of the suggested consensus that capitalism does not work or becomes grossly dysfunctional when a small minority of the population owns or controls the majority or large majority of the national wealth, like the top 20% owning or controlling 80% of the wealth or money pie and that for capitalism to be robust — that is, for the free-market economy to be healthy, resilient and dynamic on the whole and for the long term — it must be a democratically based capitalism, that handsomely rewards business, investment and product initiative, talent, creativity and innovation but that widely diffuses or distributes abundant money and wealth to the laboring, small-business and start-up-business general populace whose spending keeps the money in ongoing plentiful circulation feeding investment markets, commerce, business, employment and government revenues for funding infrastructure and common-good and vital public services and programs. Many other economists and the Occupy, or 99%, populist protest movement (a movement with a resonant message but an incompetently constituted and comported movement) currently respectively warn and protest that extreme disproportionate wealth (including income) ownership or control by a small minority of the population (concentrated wealth control by a small minority), whether it be the wealthiest 1, 10 or 20-plus percent of the population, is a cause of economic constipation, or a lack of healthy economic flow and dynamism of a nation. In nations where this is the permanent state of affairs, there is fatally broken capitalism or dead-on-arrival (DOA) capitalism with sprawling and wretched poverty (where people urinate and defecate out doors, often publicly, and many others defecate in plastic bags they discard), shantytowns, slum cities, dirt roads in the main, little and cheap infrastructure, etc., abounding crime and gross injustice often officially unheeded and not seriously quantified, arbitrary justice on the whole, rampant government and business corruption that is largely unpunished, a miniscule and fragile middle class, all the while with marooned, gated or walled splendorous enclaves of plenty for the rich of staggering and comparatively staggering wealth. These nations are referred to as third-world oligarchies, plutocracies or kleptocracies or a combination of these. Do we already have a too-big-to-let-fail, obsessive-compulsive corporate banking and investment kleptocracy? — or even a kleptocorporatocracy, as some say we do?

Bush-II’s VP Dick Cheney never stopped giving speeches claiming the presence of WMD’s (weapons of mass destruction) in Iraq as the basis for the U.S.-led invasion of Iraq and sustained war there despite U.N. WMD inspector Hans Blix’s and his team’s repeated thorough hi-tech inspections there and reports of no evidence of WMDs and after successive U.S. inspectors Marine Col. One must ask “What is powertics and what are powerticians?” The answer is: powertics is applied power politics — that is, social manipulation and mobilization primarily for political and government control — the retention or acquisition of such control, be it internal or external, employing all means of influence, without ethical constraint or regard (but often with the pretense, veneer or facade of morality, as a tactic), within the law to the limits of the law, and any, if not every, means beyond the law that can go uncaught and escape prosecution on the part of the masterminds and executives of the manipulation. Powerticians are the conceivers, theoreticians, directors, engineers and practitioners of the manipulation — that is, the masterminds and executives of the manipulation. Historically, in the ultimate extreme, powertics has included torture, assassination attempts and accomplished assassinations, murder, massacres, pogroms, coups, suicide bombings, mayhem and devastation terrorism, guerilla war and conventional war. The United States, its presidency, society and path into the future are the focus and object of powertics and powerticians, on a scale as never before seen, since the secession of the slavery states and the ensuing civil war under the Lincoln Presidency. Anti-democratic financially parasitical and predatory feudal capitalism that puts such laissez-faire marketplace libertarian capitalism and corporate and commercial interests and rights before the rights, welfare and common good of the American populace, its victim and feeding host, and before our federal constitution and democratic-republic form of government (which its proponents are cynically trying to identify with themselves and their undertaking to dismantle the federal social safety net for the populace in order to minimize their own taxes), is the culprit. After having repeatedly raided and looted the mother-lode treasury of the American taxpayers and sheared the splendorous American golden fleece and fed fat on the succulent American sheeople, frenzied feudal capitalism, with its teeth still sunk in and its tongue lapping and savoring insatiably, is yet hankering for another delectable serving and is being overcome with an ever-brewing fit over the prospect of the feast running out and not being replenished, with the new Democratic Party Presidency and Congressional majority sympathetic to democratic capitalism economic policies and curtailing feudal capitalism policies that have gutted the American economy while hugely increasing the wealth of some few corporations and the high wealth class. Feudal capitalism is madly marshaling its considerable resources and forces to depose this change and the Democratic Party change agents and retrieve government control for reinstatement of policies to thwart pending taxes on its extraordinarily increased wealth, accountability for taxation of its secreted and exiled hidden wealth and regulation of its unfettered economic looting practices, of American public-entity, small-business and household investors, and of workers and public treasuries. The unscrupulous pampered and spoiled, privileged top dogs of dog-eat-dog feudal, libertarian capitalism will do whatever it takes to regain, have and keep their unrestrained self-indulgent, privileged lives of extravagance and grandeur and self-aggrandizement and way with and in America, in the least (although decedent estate taxes were entirely eliminated in the initial but outdated Bush-II-era federal tax cuts for the first decade of the 21st Century, with the about-to-expire Bush-II-era federal tax cuts modified and extended in late December of 2010, each heir to a decedent estate is cumulatively exempt from paying federal inheritance or decedent-estate taxes on $5,000,000.00 of value of the total value of the decedent estate — or a total exemption from tax of $10,000,000.00 for two heirs or of $15,000,000.00 for three heirs, and so forth — until 2013, at which time the tax exemption drops to $1,000,000.00 per heir, providing the Bush-II-era tax cuts are not extended again before 2013). They will try every tool and weapon in their warehouse and armory to mobilize the American populace and voters against their own self-interest, accusatorially shouting the term socialism as something disreputable, taboo and gravely immoral that must be repudiated and shunned, in order to have their way — where, in cite of fact, socialism, or socialist measures, is/are not in violation of and prohibited by our federal constitution, nor unlawful, anymore than is capitalism, nor are they immoral, unlike the primacy-of-profit and profits-before-the-common-good and populace libertarian form of capitalism.

Key to feudal libertarian capitalism’s restoration of government power for itself and its offensive against the rule of democratic capitalism and the Democratic Party Presidency and Congressional majority is its strategy and campaign of mass, or public, mind control. Yes, I said the forbidden paranoia loony-bin, conspiracy theorist words “mass ‘mind control’.” What in this world, in a sane and reasonable commentary, is mass mind control or simply mind control, one must ask? Mind control techniques are many and differ in their elements and complexity among different individuals and groups utilizing them. The formerly so-called “Red” China and North Korea were notoriously renown for successfully employing these techniques in reeducation camps and centers for thought reform and will seduction (e.g., reliable and demonstrated shift in allegiance) of prisoners of war and ideologically deviant communist party members and officials of their own nations and such citizens of premium value, such as politically astray intellectuals, professionals and soldiers. The social control techniques of Reverend Sun Myung Moon and the so-called Moonies on recruits to the Moon Unification Church have been studied in psychology graduate and post-graduate school in the U.S. and have been found to be soft but no less effective mind-control or brain-washing techniques to those used in Mao-era China and Kim II Sung-era North Korea. This is to say that mind control is brain washing and that brain washing works on very many people in bending them mentally, emotionally and behaviorally. In the 1970s and 1980s many U.S. parents whose late-teen emancipated and early adult children had joined the Reverend Sun Myung Moon Unification Church rescued those children, or had those children rescued, from the residential facilities of the Moon organization and forcibly, at odds with the law, turned them over to psychologists, psychiatrists or mind-control analysts for mind-control deprogramming. Brain washing and mind control are no joke or delusion; they are real and highly effective practices. The social control techniques of mass murderer Charles Manson and his post-adolescent female cult gang, the Reverend Jim Jones of Peoples Temple, Bhagwan Shree Rajneesh of Rajneeshpuram, the Reverend David Koresh of the Branch Davidians and the Church of Scientology have also attracted academic attention and study in the context of brain washing and mind control. Defector accounts have also been published of the social-control techniques of renegade Mormon polygamous family cults, involving at times underage-girl wife-mothers (“baby mamas” in hip-hop lingo).  From circa the year 1975 until the mid 1980s numerous in-depth news reports were published in U.S. newspapers and magazines on U.S. Central Intelligence Agency and Army mind-control projects and experiments, notably on unwitting subjects, in one experiment using children, and involving the administration of psycho-active drugs.  

Also, a mass mind-control practice by advertisers — variously termed subliminal advertising, subliminal seduction, subliminal mind manipulation and subliminal brain manipulation — came to light in mainstream news media reporting and books in the late 1960s and early 1970s that also was a subject of graduate and post-graduate study in psychology in the U.S.  Subliminal advertising or mind manipulation involved the embedding of imagery such as repetitive faint images, without or with spoken words, just below the threshold of conscious perception, in movies or movie frames, that elicited the purchase of popcorn or soda during the intermission of the movies (there no longer are movie intermissions and this practice has been outlawed), or such words in music elicited or suggested the purchase of a product or the performance of a particular behavior or that planted or seeded an idea in the minds of listeners — also, this practice might be interpreted as subliminal hypnosis.  

Although the techniques of brain washing or mind control and thus social control may vary and be doctrinal or improvised and proprietary among practitioners, a common denominator definition for them all and the practice of mass or group mind control is:The exclusive or predominate effective control of information and the means of communication and influence for the purpose of shaping and orienting (or directing) thought, attitudes and behavior — thought being inclusive of thinking, beliefs, viewpoints, values, outlook, opinion and ideology as well, and attitudes also including sentiments, emotions, feeling and reactability (with these three being particularly susceptible to exploitation, especially their outputs or states of insecurity, “fear,” “phobia,” hysteria, anger and rage) and the means of influence including broadcast and publications media, censorship (other than of necessary clear-and-present danger incitement words, conduct, publications and media, and degeneracy — such as child-pornography, rape, bestiality, snuff and cruelty — photos and media productions, etc.), rhetoric, celebrity and prestigious spokespersons,  education, propaganda, indoctrination, jobs, job advancement and security or sanctions (good or bad reviews, promotion, demotion, immobility, termination), food, shelter, financial, sexual and drug compromise,  attention, acceptance, respect, praise, love and affection, social access, friendship, peer influence and pressure, privileges, status, rank, income, privation, isolation, rejection, disregard, disrespect, ridicule, hostile criticism, discrimination, deprivation (particularly of sleep, and physical energy by induced mental and physical fatigue), threats, violence, combat and all conceivable other sources of persuasion and dissuasion (reward, withdrawn or diminished reward, and punishment, or withdrawn or diminished punishment), ad infinitum. Perhaps needless to say, the concentrated control of mainstream news, pseudo news, infotainment, communications and entertainment media and such industries (particularly mental-exertion-free, largely mentally passive, lazy-brained viewing and listening broadcast mass media — producing cerebral zombies) by feudal libertarian capitalism mass-media moguls and corporations in our society, subjects or disposes the body of our national mass media to vulnerability in the service of private-interest, partisan, ideological and political abuse and misuse equivalent to the brain-washing misuse of the mass media system of a totalitarian form of government for total immersion mass-media political and subservience indoctrination of its population.

If Americans will recognize that for any ethnicity, race, creed, religion or subculture of our nation not all of any people so affiliated are bad or good, but that there are and will always be the bad spoilers, among any of these categories that define us, who can potentially polarize us, and if we will resolve that no matter how objectionable the acts and words of these spoilers, we en mass will not turn on and aggress against one another, our society on the whole will endure in overall tranquility and proceed along the path of perpetual social and material progress and prosperity and scientific and technological advancement, and we indeed will be and remain largely, as in the words of our pledge of allegiance, “indivisible with liberty and justice for all.” Consider the following poem as a reference for a present-day elaboration on the American motto E Pluribus Unum (“Of Many One” in Latin),

We must be alert to and eschew demagogic individuals, organizations and media organs and their outputs (such as race and ethnic hate activists, gun proliferation and worship proponents, Fox News demagogues and bigots, and so forth, to my mind) who and that would, in pursuit of their own peculiar ends, exploit, if not inspire or stage on occasion, the polarizing acts and events perpetrated by the bad spoilers among us to divide, or further divide, embroil and pit us against one another. For example, if the majority of each the indigenous, Asian, black, Latin and white people of America permanently would learn not to ascribe collective guilt to or against the whole of a different others for the transgressions of individuals or subgroups of their identity group, however heinous and repugnant the acts, but would regard that these transgressors are of the same bad mentality, character and conduct as the rogues, miscreants and egregious criminals of their own kind who also aggress against members of their group, and recognize that whether the transgressors are from within or without their group they will be a chronically surfacing problem needing to be uprooted and isolated from normal civil society, or to be rehabilitated, if possible and warranted, for reintroduction into civil society, we, in effect, could not be divided emotionally and socially as a society by anyone or anything and would have a firmly anchored, peaceable, stable and harmonious society overall on an ongoing basis. This principle applies on all demographic parameters, particularly of religion, gender, sexual orientation, class, regional affiliation, subculture and ethnicity.

Some Closing Remarks with Comments on the Federal Reserve Bank & Gold

Do not be fool talked and con talked by the pro-Republican Party and pro-Tea Party right-wing-media echo machine into voting their political candidates into the presidency and majorities in both houses of Congress so as for them to be able to legislate away and/or privatize the public Social Security pension, Medicare and Unemployment Compensation insurance systems – that is, have them criticize, denigrate, talk down and away your confidence in these social safety net systems or convince us in the majority of the citizenry that they are an oppressive tax burden and an individual responsibility, where career or lifelong financial sufficiency and security are nonexistent for very many, if not most of us, and our life circumstances are highly unpredictable and precarious for most. To privatize them is to make them stock-market, investor and profit-and-loss based, and to subject them to the price and qualifications caprices and policies for insurance coverage that we see with health insurance coverage now (with cherry picking for insurance noncoverage those most in need of benefits, being high risk and expense applicants, and with steep premium increases at insurance carriers’ discretion or insistence), and run by a self-serving private corporate bureaucracy instead of a publicly accountable, overseen and staffed government bureaucracy. Talk of these changes in the social safety net by these anti-any-tax, fiscally “conservative” politicians of these two political parties is already under way. Also, their talk about putting our money supply back on the post-primitive-mind gold standard and abolishing the Federal Reserve Bank system for currency and bank lending management and transferring monetary policy to “political” executive branch and Congressional politicians and officials are the height and depth of financial stupidity and insanity in a modern, industrial international-commerce world that would do nothing but benefit the holders of gold for the short term and undermine most business activity and growth potential and the value of most non-gold investments, savings, income and currency, before the outbreak of a worldwide merchant, consumer and worker revolution, joined in by police, militaries, religious ministries, and loser politicians and billionaires and millionaires — something like the First Republic French Revolution but much worse.  Y’all, there ain’t enough precious metals in and on Planet Earth for them to serve as currency, or as stored inflation-controlling units-of-value pegs to and on the money supply, to meet the economic demands of humanity’s growing world industrial and commerce needs and the economic demands of humanity’s world population and consumers, as well as to match up with the value of all government, business, religious, nonprofit-entity and individual assets and income in the world, not even if they are combined into making a more-valuable alloy of gold and reduced to units of molecules of gold-plus pegged to a standard base-value denomination of paper, electronic and other circulating currency for controlling that the total circulating value of the money supply does not exceed the total value of the total quantity of the gold-plus alloy reserves, and as gold and the Earth’s other precious metals don’t grow but are quite finite and relatively rare — that is, for controlling currency (more dollars demanded for a corresponding foreign currency denomination in foreign currency exchange relative to international exchange rates — currency depreciation with quantity demand inflation), price (inordinate or increased dollars demanded for a or the overall spectrum and inventory of goods and services, or the rate of increase in money in circulation or supply exceeding the rate of increase in production and services, with the effect of there being a situation of overconsumption and underproduction and too much money chasing too few goods and services)  and pay (the rate of increase in per-capita or average pay and financial compensation exceeding the rate of increase in per-capita GNP, production or profit) inflation, given a marketplace of open, fair and adequate competition.  In addition, gold is not magical and has no inherent or practical value, other than the almost meaningless physical durability characteristic any metal currency has (such as lead or copper or silver and likewise), as a medium of exchange for labor and goods and services, particularly in our high-tech electronic debit-and-credit bank-card and cell-phone purchasing and banking world.  Rather, gold’s value is based on aesthetics (a soft, malleable, non-tarnishing, most glamorous metal ideal for jewelry making and the arts and crafts) and an ages-old traditional arts-and-crafts (including jewelry) demand for gold by artisans and the purchase of their products by aficionados of gold’s eye-catching beauty and on a tradition of a fetish for gold as a glittery attention-getting glamour and status symbol, applied in some past societies to elite coinage with the images of royalty and rulers and other power symbolism.  However, even for jewelry nowadays, with the high price of gold and natural gems, many consumers are adapting to stunningly attractive inexpensive jewelry made of beautiful imitation gold and synthetic gems. The teens and children who grow up on alternative but as beautiful jewelry will likely  in large numbers regard pricey natural gold and natural gems as environmentally uncool with respect to the morally problematic issue of their hazardous and destructive mining and quarrying extraction from the Earth and as frivolous and profligate-spending status symbols for suckers and snobs with respect to their extreme and obscene price tags.  I have some of this alternative exquisite jewelry myself and marvel at its beauty and routinely gift it.

Appropriately, the value and quantity of the money supply should be based, roughly speaking, on a monetary formula that takes into account and in some manner links a universally agreed upon standard unit of financial value divided into the summed value of GNP (gross national product), GNW, or gross national wealth (estimated equity in assets, privately and publicly held, of the nation owned worldwide), plus foreign deposits in U.S. financial institutions and exercised net international credit (private-sector given minus received credit), minus combined federal, state and local government budget deficits and debts, etc., and should not nonsensically and irrationally be based arbitrarily merely on a commodity or commodities.  The nonsensical and irrational proposal for reinstatement of an outdated, ancient gold standard as the basis for our monetary policy in our modern, global high-tech economy is clear proof of the power of mind control (visceral and reflexive responding impelled by brainwashing), in this instance by indoctrination and an education, as well as perhaps an upbringing, together with social conditioning and programming, in outdated economic teachings and an environment in which the belief was that gold somehow magically and inexplicably intrinsically was/is the basis of monetary value.  In short, mind control is both a naturally and unnaturally occurring process of psychological conditioning, programming and manipulation.  One may undergo it passively, involuntarily or voluntarily or in a mixture of these.  In its unnatural form, it simply can be termed “effective psychological manipulation.”

As to the matter of the Federal Reserve Bank, banking-system scholars and highly educated, hands-on trained and experienced experts, selected from within the banking system with the vetting, confidence and imprimatur of the banking system, in position as banking-system and monetary-policy formulators, managers and regulators, subject to political and governmental approval, oversight and accountability, are a much lesser hazard and evil to our economy and financial system than groping, partisan and shaky, and often shady and downrightly financially inept, political officials directly managing, regulating and gambling with our or any banking and monetary system — the lesser of the evils as well as hazards for our economic system.  This state of affairs constitutes a democratic-republic staffing and authority-delegating process consistent with the spirit of our federal Constitution and executive-branch agency and department leadership staffing practices.

The Republican Party has not been the party of President Lincoln since the presidency of Richard Nixon and the Tea Party in no way is symbolic of or in the tradition of the revolutionary philosophy and ideals of Crispus Attucks, the original U.S. colonial revolutionary Congress, the spirit of the original and evolving U.S. Constitution nor revolutionary general-in-chief and first U.S. President George Washington, who declined to be made king by their ilk. These American tories have partially privatized our military and now we have “Rah, rah, perpetual psychotic patriotic and widening war,” driven by war-companies’ and military-industrial-complex pressures for steady and increased revenues, profits and stock dividends as well as by the fake-patriot cheerleader right-wing TV, radio and print broadcast and news mass communications media.  The neo-conservative, tory Republicans have partially privatized the U.S. Postal Service and it is a constant financial failure and is always begging to raise stamp prices, or postage rates, for delivery and now wants to reduce delivery service from six to five days per week , as well as begin closing, according to a Wall Street Journal report of 01-24-2011, 2000 more post offices starting in March of 2011, on top of 491 it previously announced in 2010 that it would be closing, to cut expenses to hopefully improve its solvency. They tried to partially privatize the IRS but the pilot-study private companies competing with the IRS on the same jobs and missions were soundly trounced by IRS workers’ performance. In addition, their warmongering and globalization economic policies under President George W. Bush have bankrupted our government in terms of the size of our federal budget deficit and national debt, the housing market, bank lending and employment (with so much manufacturing and so many jobs having been outsourced to low-expense, dime-labor third world nations, to bolster corporate profits, executive salaries and bonuses, and returns to shareholders) and corrupted the product and operating integrity as well as solvency of much of our business community for the mammoth profits and benefit of the relatively few affluent and rich, as well as having jeopardized the political and potential oil-supply stability of the heartlands of OPEC and Islam, all of which they audaciously are trying to blame on the Democratic Party government officials who are trying to clean up their economic mess and catastrophe.

What is the future of America?  It is in the minds and hands of American voters, for a short while.

The quality of America’s future will, at root, be determined by our permanent receptivity to, support for and mastery of science and engineering, and innovation and new technology, as well as by our choice of either abiding with the politically and environmentally problematical fossil-fuels energy model of the past or electing for, supporting and investing in the emerging and rapidly evolving new and clean solar, wind, geothermal, biomass, hydrogen-fuel-cell and other alternative energy-sources model that will power the great nations of the dawning future.

The new era of great societies will be founded, built, and powered on the forward-minded and great pioneering education, thought, science, technology and investment of the proactively radical – not conservative – human brain power, passion and endeavor for betterment that precede thus: 1), inexhaustible 24/7 intercontinentally ocean-floor-cable transmitted and exchanged clean solar-wind-hydro-biomass-and-geothermal-generated electrical fuel power, virtually eternally positively evolvable, for buildings and infrastructure, high-speed rail, all-electric and interim electric/vapor-natural-gas hybrid vehicles (BYD company of China reports that it already has deployed as taxi cabs fleets of all-electric cars that drive 250 kilometers, or 155 miles, on a full charge of a battery that can half charge in 10 minutes  for 77 miles of drive, with reductions in this recharging time to come, thus having a much more rapid battery recharge time than any other make of electric vehicle but having a significantly less drive range on a full charge than the currently sold and newly forthcoming Tesla Motors all-electric vehicle models, which have driving ranges of 386 to 483 kilometers, or 240 to 300 miles, per full battery recharge, whereas most other all-electric vehicles have a drive range of 161 or less kilometers, or 100 miles or less, per full battery recharge); 2), maximally clean and powerful hydrogen-fuel-cell vehicle technology immediately capable of powering all civilian and military heavy-duty road and ground vehicles, but very expensive presently; 3), bioengineering and biotechnology (including the ethical production of healthful plant and animal tek foods as well as biofuels and bioplastics); 4), regenerative, regrow, repair, heal and cure DNA, stem-cell, prosthetic, sonic, electrical, electro-magnetic, light-spectrum, laser and mineral medicine; 5), nano-technology; 6), advances in computer science and cyber-technology; 7), and ethically and responsibly conducted low-cost mini-tech and micro-tech space exploration and research, and near-Earth extraterrestrial human colonization, paleontology and archeology (maybe), mining, industrialization and economic expansion, which will upgrade human understanding and knowledge of cosmological physics, geo-genesis and biogenesis and enable human manipulation of this knowledge for successful and efficient nearby extraterrestrial terra-forming, technological development and human habitation (Mars and its 2 moons, and the confirmed valuable and precious minerals-rich asteroids near Mars) as well as to protect and improve the geological, climate and weather, marine and wildlife and agricultural conditions on Earth.

With respect to space exploration, if our species is to make two-way speed-of-light radio-wave contact with cognitively and technologically advanced extraterrestrial life, such exospecies would have to be cognitively equal or superior to the technically smartest and best educated members of our species but our planet would be protected by the conceptually unbreachable moat of interstellar space that surrounds and separates our solar system — in which our planet observably is the only celestial body in it that possesses or hosts biologically highly evolved surface life — from our closest solar-system neighbor Proxima Centauri and beyond.  This interstellar space is most credibly an untraversable barrier by extrastellar biologically complex species (complex life as we know it) or invasion by any extrastellar cognitively and technologically advanced or far superior species (complex biology), which, nevertheless, if it were conquestive and colonialist, and, most doubtfully, were able to make the passing and survive, could alternatively colonize perhaps billions of other more conveniently located, potentially life-hosting and resources-rich planets and moons in our galaxy, the Milky Way, of 300 billion stars (solar systems), most of which, based on what we  know about our own solar system (with 8 planets, 5 known dwarf planets, 139 known moons and 700,000 to 1.7 million asteroids in the asteroid belt), will likely possess resources but will have environmental conditions inhospitable to life as we know it, making for a virtual infinity of natural resources available to them on so many complex-life uninhabited worlds, without pressure for competition with other cognitively and technologically superior species.   For mortal space travelers to breach by teleportation the moat of largely empty interstellar space between our solar system and the closest neighboring solar or planetary system (the star system Proxima Centauri, approximately 4 light years away, with  the speed-of-light travel of 299,792 kilometers per second x the number of seconds in 4 years equaling the number of kilometers to the closet star to our sun or with the speed-of-light travel of 186,282 miles per second x the number of seconds in 4 years equaling the number of miles to the closest star to our sun), they would have to travel impossibly, against the laws of physics (being the laws of cosmic nature), multiples or many multiples of the speed of light, in order to avoid a prohibitively long-term journey and the feeding, toilet, sanitation and hygiene, temperature-control, biological, psychological and social health, as well as supplies and mechanical, etc., problems and deadly hazards associated with extreme-distance cloistered travel, with the speed of light being the speed limit of energy and matter, and their embodiments, in the universe.  However and otherwise, if they were transported at the speed of light, or impossibly or improbably more, they inescapably normally and naturally would disintegrate and convert into pure light at that speed (299,792 kilometers per second or 186,282 miles per second).  Even if, practically, robots were to travel at a high-speed fraction of the speed of light that was not disintegrating, disabling or deleterious of them or their carrier spacecraft, it would probably take them scores of thousands to hundreds of thousands of years in human time to breach that moat of largely empty interstellar space between our solar system and its closest solar system neighbor Proxima Centauri, providing they could do without unavailable maintenance, repair and fuel resources during the crossing.  If we make contact with intelligent extraterrestrial species, particularly cognitively and technologically superior or far superior species, we can expect that they would or will be communitarian or communal (group-living, social and cooperative) species — a fundamental requirement for the fashioning, existence and perpetuation of an organized and complex  society (even on the bee, termite or ant level), or civilization — that would have solved most of their survival, social, economic and environmental problems and would be highly enlightened and peaceful but pragmatically militarily advanced and able to defend themselves against dangers posed by cognitively and technological achieved but not as intelligent, enlightened and socially and mentally evolved other communal species, like humans (primitive, and developmentally and technically inferior in comparison to themselves).   None of this is to suggest that advanced extraterrestrially complex intelligent life is not present in our solar system or that an advancedextrastellar species native to a planet on an enormously different time scale than ours could not make and survive such a journey, in its own time frame, in a round trip to our solar system and back home, via relativity time, such as if a day for itself and its planet (a complete rotation of its planet on its axis) were something like 3,000 years in human or Earth time, and if a year for its planet (a revolution around its star) were something like 400,000 years in Earth time, and if members of its species, roughly guessing, were to have a peak physical fitness lifespan of  several hundreds of years in its time  and if its star and planet were roughly within the distance of 15 or so light years from our star and planet and if it could safely, healthwise, and technically travel at roughly 80,467,200 km., or 50,000,000 mi., or more, per hour in our time.  Back to the point, we would have much to learn from a cognitively and technologically more advanced species in contacts with it at an ideal safe distance (unless they improbably could teleport themselves en mass instantaneously) that could benefit all of our fields of science, including social and criminal science, as well as our medicine, mathematics, engineering, technology and general problem-solving capabilities and know-how.  Contact with a cognitively and technologically advanced and superior extraterrestrial civilization at a safe distance is desirable and is most likely to benefit our species with incomprehensible advances in our education, knowledge and know-how, science, medicine and technology.  If our nation fears and The fossil-fuels energy paradigm for powering advanced industrial society is now unnecessary as well as, most importantly, is toxic and dangerous, politically, atmospherically and biologically. Even natural gas (NG – natural vapor gas, distinct from liquid gas derived from fossil oil) is toxic and dangerous, although less so than filthy coal and very dirty fossil petroleum, or oil and oil’s derivative gasoline, and less risky than nuclear power plants for generating electricity and does not have the serious non-recyclable nuclear waste problem of electricity-generating nuclear power plants, a massive and environmentally threatening problem according to the scientific consensus of the European Union and expert nuclear science consultants to state legislatures in the U.S.  Natural gas, that is not obtained by poisonous and explosive hydraulic fracking (an overtly environmentally dangerous process denied to be dangerous and to involve dangerous and carcinogenic chemicals by its practitioners, chemicals they refuse to disclose behind the argument that the chemicals are trade secrets), is an interim, bridge solution for national fuel-energy independence and security from foreign dirty fossil-fuel oil imports and environmentally filthy and environmentally devastating coal, which makes up circa 46% of the fuel sources for generating utilities power-plant electrical energy, something for which there is an abundance of natural gas to do the same job alone long term instead and of which it is and has been doing the job in part. Natural gas and methane gas (MG) extracted by biodigesters from human excrement at municipal sewage treatment plants can be used in conjunction with solar-and-wind-generated electrical fuel energy at hybrid NG-MG/solar-wind electricity-generating power plants to replace coal-fired power plants for generating electricity and for creating newly engineered hybrid vehicles that are no longer electric/liquid-gas hybrid vehicles but are electric/compressed-natural-gas or compressed-methane-gas hybrid vehicles, capable of being recharged and fueled at home and publicly — all of which can be phased out and converted to solo electric vehicles and solar and wind electricity-generating power plants when electric vehicles and solar and wind electricity are very cheap, and when home and public electric-car recharging ports and stations are pervasive and their batteries can be charged in 10 minutes or less at home and away from home, and when solar and wind electricity-generating facilities and sources, and the intercontinental solar-and-wind-electricity-sharing infrastructure and grid, are dominant and are more than able to supply an unfailing large surplus of worldwide, around-the-clock, 24/7, electricity permanently, as well as when solar-and-wind-generated electricity can be stored on-site long term.

As Earth is a natural bi-solar cyclically rotating planet, it can produce around-the-clock intercontinental solar-generated electrical energy for intercontinental exchange and sharing (with some half of our planet always cycling through either a day or night phase), forever, via redundantly numerous below-ocean-and-sea-floor electricity transmission cables.

We must ignore the scoffers, skeptics, cynics and vested-interest critics, naysayers and trash-talkers about and against solar-electric power plants and cleanly charged and clean-running electric road vehicles. These technologies are irreversibly here to stay and will dramatically improve and dominate new power-plant and off-grid, on-site power sources and vehicle production and purchases in 35 to 50 years.

At a minimum, the U.S. and Canada, with their vast natural stores of natural gas, and perhaps the entire American continent — excluding natural gas extraction by hydraulic fracking — are in the position of virtually immediately doing their part in minimizing their contribution to human CO2 pollution of the atmosphere as well as global warming  and of achieving transportation fuel-energy national independence and security by changing over from a road transportation system of gasoline-fueled (with gasoline derived from fossil oil) vehicles to one of compressed-natural-gas (CNG) or compressed-methane-gas (CMG)/electric-powered hybrid vehicles and from filthy coal-fired electricity-generating power plants to relatively clean NG or MG and combination NG (or MG)-solar-wind electricity-generating power plants, eliminating natural gas as a fuel energy source when all-electric  road vehicles have very long drive ranges and their batteries can be recharged in 10 minutes or less and when an intercontinental clean-and-green energy grid and infrastructure is fully established and reliably functioning.  The CNG-fuel feature of CNG-electric hybrid vehicles (the same feature applicable for possibly near-future compressed-methane-gas fueling) would allow rapid — in a few minutes at quick-fill public CNG fueling station as opposed to slow-fill 8-12-hr. home-fueling CNG ports — fueling of the vehicles, and on-the-go charging/recharging of the battery electric-drive feature of hybrid vehicles when they discharge, conserving NG and minimizing its lighter, or comparatively light, CO2 emissions and relying primarily or substantially on the electric-drive feature and the zero CO2 emissions of electric driving.  CNG or CMG/plug-in-electric hybrid vehicles could be fueled/recharged at home, work and public fueling stations once the easily installed fueling infrastructure is pervasively in place for these, like gas stations are now.  However, already on the roads, visibly in public bus transit, in modest numbers are hydrogen fuelcell vehicles that are clean running and powerful and easily capable of displacing the need for gasoline and NG altogether as an automotive fuel resource and technology, once the price for this technology becomes widely affordable, where hydrogen-fuel-cell vehicle technology is superior all around to both of the former fossil fuels for powering buses, big-rig trucks, tractors and all other heavy-duty road and ground civilian and military vehicles in the near term.  Britain is aggressively betting on, investing in, developing and launching hydrogen-fuel-cell vehicle technology.

As a start in establishing a global intercontinental network of electricity cables for exchanging and sharing solar- and wind-sourced electricity generated worldwide, green-tek geographic leaders California, Oregon, Washington state and Hawaii of the U.S and the nations Australia, Japan, China and India of the Pacific Ocean basin can and should join forces in a joint venture of their interested and willing public and private utilities concerns — with national, state or provincial, and local government licensing and facilitation — to lay sea- and ocean-floor and subsurface overland solar-and-wind-power smart-grid cables between themselves, as appropriate, for around-the-clock, everyday, year-round, perpetual electricity sharing and exchange, for their eventual fossil-fuels-free, fuel-energy independence and security.  India’s southeastern coast and China’s southwestern coast could, when mutually economically feasible, further link to the nations of southeast Asia and India’s southwestern coast could link to the politically stable and friendly coastal African nations of Kenya, Tanzania, Mozambique, the large island nation of Madagascar, and the whole loop of southern African coastal nations to and including Angola.  In turn, when mutually economically feasible, the southeast coastal nations of Africa could  link to the Philippines, Malaysia, Indonesia and Australia and the southwest-coastal and west-coast African nations could link across the southern Atlantic Ocean to the nations of French Guiana, Brazil, Uruguay, Argentina and the southern tip of Chile on the east coast of the South American subcontinent.  A similar linking can and should be initiated between the states of the east coast of the U.S. and the easily accessible far-western, sun-rich nations of France, Portugal and Spain of Europe, of which the latter 2 nations are already leading solar-electric-power nations in the world, and the politically stable and friendly nations of west Africa.  For the U.S., the east-coast and west-coast intercontinental green energy links can be combined via electrical cables routed across the nation from coast to coast to supply uninterrupted or supplemental green energy for interior states.  Ultimately, all nations should and could be solar-wind green-and-clean electric-energy linked via marine-floor electricity cables between coasts linked to subsurface overland cabling and national clean energy grids and infrastructures for universal solar- and wind-sourced electricity distribution from coast to coast and interiors or hinterlands of nations and to the whole of landlocked nations.

If we acknowledge, believe in and commit to the feasible and pursue and implement the feasible, it materializes into solid, functional reality. The primary obstacle to the full participation of the U.S. in this emerging, societally advanced future, is a potential majority-voter and Congressional attachment to, comfort and complacency with and investment income from the technology of the past and of the status quo, and fear, dislike, skepticism and rejection of the inevitable better and healthier technology of the near future.

Other reasons we should write off OPEC, in addition to the environmentally despoiling, poisoning & degrading effects of our society’s dependency on and overwhelming use of imported fuel oil, including the dirtiest and most polluting fracking-extracted tar-sands oil of Canada:

The people of the OPEC nations are ruled by lords-proprietor families and castes (including religious clerical castes, as in Iran, and the Wahhabi Islamic-code compliance enforcers of Saudi Arabia) who view and treat their nations as sole proprietorship plantation businesses serving for the rulers’ enrichment, granduer, privilige, glory and social command.

2.  ”When the negative of misery, desperation, seething and volatile resentment exceeds in potency the negative of fearsome brutality & oppression, revolt occurs.”

The environment of harsh governance of the general populace, high unemployment, majority poverty and self-serving proprietary government has given rise to this psychological climate and result in the Islamic and OPEC nations of North Africa and the Middle East.
